Shawn Mayers is a New Construction Superintendent in Kinston, North Carolina, who grew up in New York and has spent his life in residential building. Outside of job sites, he’s just as likely to be helping rescue animals as he is walking a frame line.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?
I’ve been in construction most of my life. Growing up in New York, I learned early on from family and neighbors how to build and repair homes. My first “apprenticeship” was basically holding tools and watching people who cared about doing things right. Those lessons stuck. Now, as a new construction superintendent in Kinston, I oversee every step of residential builds. That means coordinating contractors, inspecting details, and making sure the homes we finish stand the test of time. To me, it’s not just about hitting deadlines — it’s about building a space where families will celebrate holidays, raise kids, and feel safe. That responsibility is what makes this work personal.
How would you describe your personal or professional vibe in 3 words?
Steady, faithful, detailed. Steady because construction can turn chaotic fast, and I keep calm no matter what. Faithful because prayer helps me make good decisions under pressure. Detailed because I believe one small oversight can create big problems down the line.
What’s one fun fact about you most people don’t know?
I once bottle-fed a litter of abandoned kittens while managing a framing crew. My coworkers would be eating lunch on site while I was in my truck, lining up little syringes of kitten formula. It wasn’t glamorous, but those kittens survived.
What’s your favorite TV show right now?
Barnwood Builders on Magnolia Network. I like watching how they reclaim old barns and cabins. They respect the original craft while turning the wood into something new and lasting.
What’s your most-used social media app these days?
Facebook. I follow a lot of local animal rescue groups like Safe Haven for Cats and also building forums where people trade tips on framing and insulation. It’s where both sides of my life meet.

What was the first social media app you ever joined?
MySpace. I remember trying to figure out which song to put on my profile — it was probably something from Metallica. It feels ancient now, but at the time it was groundbreaking.

On The Fine Homebuilding Podcast, a guest said: “Don’t build for the inspector, build for your grandchildren.” That’s advice I carry with me every day.
If you could collab with any influencer or celeb, who would it be?
Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer. He focuses on calm, confident leadership. That mindset works with dogs, but it also works with construction crews. A collaboration that combined animal rescue and building would be a dream.
What’s a habit, hack, or tool you swear by for staying informed or inspired?
I keep an old notebook in my truck. I use it to jot down construction notes, quotes, and prayers. Going back through those pages reminds me of the progress I’ve made and keeps me grounded.
