Mitch Seaworth: The Coach With a Camera and a Sharp Eye for Real Moments

Mitch Seaworth didn’t expect to become “the guy with the camera.” Most of his life was spent on the field—not watching from the sidelines, but in the thick of it. He played sports growing up, then moved into coaching. Sports weren’t just part of his life; they were the structure of it. But a few years ago, something shifted. Mitch picked up a camera for fun—and it changed the way he saw everything.

It started with snapping photos at games he attended as a fan. Nothing fancy. Just small moments that caught his eye: a coach kneeling to encourage a player, a water break turned pep talk. The more he photographed, the more he realised he was telling stories—ones that rarely make the highlight reel.

Photography became more than a hobby. It became a way to stay in the game after stepping off the bench. Today, Mitch is known for his quiet presence behind the lens and his ability to capture the real, unfiltered moments of local sports. No trophies, no press—just pride, grit, and heart.

What sets Mitch apart is his belief that meaningful stories aren’t always loud. They live in the overlooked in-between—the moments before the whistle blows or after the final play. He’s not chasing fame. He’s preserving what matters most, one frame at a time.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

I’m a former coach turned sports photographer based in a small town in the Midwest. I started taking pictures just for fun, but it quickly turned into something more meaningful. Now I photograph local sports (mostly local college games) and try to capture the emotion and energy that often goes unnoticed.

How would you describe your personal or professional vibe in 3 words?

Observant, steady, and detailed. I like to stay in the background and let moments happen naturally. I’m not into staging shots—I want the real stuff, the stuff you’ll remember 10 years from now.

What’s one fun fact about you most people don’t know?

I grew up fishing a lot and still go out to the lake when I need to clear my head. Some of my earliest photos were actually of the water and wildlife out there.

What’s your favorite TV show right now?

Heartland. It nails the emotional side of family and small communities. I like that it is family oriented and the scenery is gorgeous.

Are there any influencers or creators you never miss content from?

I follow photographer Dave Sandford. His nature and wildlife shots are incredible and remind me to stay patient with the process. I also keep up with @humansofny for the storytelling.

Are there any must-follow accounts or pages for people in your industry?

@smalltownhoops and @undertheradarhoops both do a great job highlighting community sports. Also, @sportsphotoguru shares great tips for shooting fast-paced games with minimal gear.

What’s the best advice you’ve heard from a podcast or interview?

“Be where the story is, not where the crowd is.” That stuck with me. Some of the best moments in a game happen away from the ball or the scoreboard. You just have to be paying attention.

If you could collab with any influencer or celeb, who would it be?

Ken Burns. I love the way he uses still images and voice to bring historical stories to life. I loved his Baseball documentary. A collaboration on telling the story of local sports in small-town America would be amazing.

What’s a habit, hack, or tool you swear by for staying informed or inspired?

I start every day at the gym—no phone, no distractions. It clears my head and helps me notice the little things. Inspiration usually shows up when you’re not trying too hard to find it.
