Kate Cherry is an acclaimed theatre and opera director and arts leader working in the performing arts industry. She is currently working as a consultant.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?
I’m a theatre and opera director, consultant, and arts leader. My work sits across creative practice and institutional leadership. I direct productions, mentor artists, and help build organisations where art, culture, and people can thrive. I’ve worked in Australia and the United States for many years, leading major cultural institutions and creating work on stages around the world.
How would you describe your personal or professional vibe in 3 words?
Vision-driven, collaborative, and grounded. Vision matters because without it you don’t move forward. Collaboration is essential because theatre is never a solo act. And grounded because the work has to be sustainable for people and institutions, not just exciting in the moment.
What’s one fun fact about you most people don’t know?
I reset my thinking by swimming. Some of my clearest ideas come while I’m doing laps. It’s where reflection and strategy meet for me.
What’s your favorite TV show right now?
I’m always drawn to strong writing and character-driven work. I am currently watching The Diplomat and Homeland because they are driven by brilliant, flawed female characters leading lives of significance, and Black Snow because it is embedded in the Australian landscape, and I admire Travis Fimmel’s work.
What’s your most-used social media app these days?
LinkedIn. I value thoughtful conversations and staying connected to colleagues across the arts and education sectors. It’s a space where ideas, leadership, and creative work intersect in a meaningful way. I’m always open to connecting with people who care about culture, collaboration, and building strong creative communities.
What was the first social media app you ever joined?
Facebook, like many people of my generation. It was initially about staying connected across countries and industries.
Are there any influencers or creators you never miss content from?
I tend to follow thinkers and makers rather than traditional influencers. Artistic directors, writers, designers, and cultural leaders who are deeply engaged with ideas and process always catch my attention.
Are there any must-follow accounts or pages for people in your industry?
Major theatre companies, festivals, and training institutions are important. I also think it's essential to follow independent artists and emerging voices. That’s where new ideas often appear first.
Do you listen to any podcasts related to your field or niche?
Yes, though not exclusively theatre podcasts. I listen to conversations about leadership, culture, creativity, and systems. I find cross-industry thinking very useful.

What’s the best advice you’ve heard from a podcast or interview?
Pay attention to culture, not just outcomes. If the culture is strong, the work follows. That idea has stayed with me throughout my leadership roles.
If you could collab with any influencer or celeb, who would it be?
I’m always interested in collaborators who are curious and generous thinkers. Writers and directors who challenge form and invite conversation would be high on my list.
What’s a habit, hack, or tool you swear by for staying informed or inspired?
Reading combined with writing. It sounds simple, but I am a voracious reader across a variety of topics. Reading informs and inspires me. Then writing allows me to reflect, observe, and connect ideas. Combined with honest conversations with peers and friends, it keeps me clear and inspired.
