Bobbie Mangini and the 50 Auditions That Changed Everything

Bobbie Mangini

Bobbie Mangini’s journey isn’t about shortcuts or overnight success. It’s about showing up, over and over, with a quiet kind of grit that doesn’t always make headlines but builds something stronger: real momentum.

Born in Medinah, Illinois, Bobbie was one of six kids—but the only athlete. She played travel softball, did gymnastics, and cheered her way through childhood. After graduating early from Barrington High School in 1988, she dove straight into college life. She earned dual degrees from DePaul University in Sociology and Anthropology, with minors in Psychology and Criminal Justice.

But the world had different plans. Becoming a young single mother shifted her focus. She worked in HR for stability, and bartended for flexibility—always doing what it took to support her kids. Acting had to wait.

It wasn’t until 1998 that she formally trained at Act One Studio in Chicago, followed by another two years at Acting Studio Chicago. She began booking small parts, but eventually stepped back again to raise her children. Years later, she returned with renewed focus—training, auditioning, and rebuilding. At one point, she went through 50 auditions with no bookings. And then, it shifted.

Off-screen, Bobbie brings the same dedication to community work. She created Operation Santa, a grassroots holiday gift drive that’s supported hundreds of children across Illinois. She also served on the board of the FISH Food Pantry and continues to support causes focused on food security and domestic violence recovery.

Today, Bobbie blends service, storytelling, and quiet resilience, proving you don’t need to shout to make an impact.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

I’m an actress, model, and longtime community volunteer. I’ve worked in HR, hospitality, and spent years raising two children as a single mom. I split my time between acting projects and service work—things like Operation Santa, food drives, and supporting my daughter’s charity work. My career didn’t start in film. It started with survival, adaptation, and putting in the work—one step at a time.

How would you describe your personal or professional vibe in 3 words?

Grounded. Resilient. Purposeful. I’m someone who thinks deeply, stays committed, and follows through—even when things take longer than expected. Whether it’s an audition or a volunteer project, I show up ready to give it my all..

What’s one fun fact about you most people don’t know?

I once auditioned 50 times and didn’t get a single callback. Most people would have given up. I just kept going. It became a kind of personal challenge. Eventually, things started to click—but it taught me not to let rejection define me.

What’s your favorite TV show right now?

I recently watched From Scratch on Netflix, and it stuck with me. It’s emotional, real, and beautifully told. I admire shows that aren’t afraid to show the messiness of life and love.

What’s your most-used social media app these days?

Instagram. It’s where I connect with people and share updates—especially around Operation Santa or upcoming projects. I also follow a lot of creatives and nonprofits there.

What was the first social media app you ever joined?

Facebook! I remember joining just to keep up with old friends, but it quickly became a way to stay connected to my community and causes I care about.

Are there any influencers or creators you never miss content from?

I really enjoy following Peter Allas—not just because he’s my acting coach, but because he shares industry insights and stays authentic. I also follow a few women-led volunteer groups that constantly inspire me with their grassroots work.

Are there any must-follow accounts or pages for people in your industry?

Casting Networks and Backstage are essentials if you’re in acting. But I also recommend following your local theatre groups or acting coaches. Smaller communities often post great opportunities first.

Do you listen to any podcasts related to your field or niche?

I enjoy The Working Actor’s Journey. It’s practical, not flashy, and gives a real look at what it takes to keep going in this industry. You hear from actors who work steadily but aren’t always household names…my kind of people.

What’s the best advice you’ve heard from a podcast or interview?

“Keep showing up.” Simple, but it stuck with me. A lot of people want success without repetition. But the work happens in the quiet, in the background, in the places no one sees.

If you could collab with any influencer or celeb, who would it be?

I’d love to work with Viola Davis. She brings powerful female-led stories to life and supports a lot of causes I care about. Plus, she balances creativity and community really well.

What’s a habit, hack, or tool you swear by for staying informed or inspired?

Every Sunday night, I reassess my week—what worked, what didn’t, what matters most in the next few days. It helps me avoid burnout and keeps me aligned with my goals. I also use Google Keep to jot down ideas on the go.
